San Francisco, CA. The defensive front of the San Francisco 49ers is getting a familiar reinforcement just days before the NFL’s new league year begins.

After evaluating their salary cap situation, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the decision to release a veteran defensive lineman whose contract carried a cap hit of nearly $19.5 million for the upcoming season.

The move instantly created one of the more intriguing reunion possibilities of the offseason.

That player is Arik Armstead, the longtime defensive anchor who previously spent nearly a decade with the San Francisco 49ers.

Within hours of the release, San Francisco moved quickly to secure a reunion, reaching agreement on a short-term deal that brings Arik Armstead back to the organization where he experienced the most success of his career.

The 32-year-old defensive lineman originally spent nine seasons with the 49ers after being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

During that time he developed into one of the most versatile players on the defensive line, capable of playing both defensive tackle and defensive end in multiple fronts.

During the 2025 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Armstead appeared in 16 games with 11 starts. He finished with 5.5 sacks, 28 tackles, eight quarterback hits and one forced fumble, remaining a productive interior defender even as Jacksonville weighed the financial implications of his contract.

For San Francisco, the timing of the reunion makes strategic sense.

The 49ers recently moved on from rotational defensive tackle Kalia Davis and face additional uncertainty with Jordan Elliott heading toward free agency.

Although the team drafted young defensive tackles CJ West and Alfred Collins to strengthen the interior long term, relying entirely on youth at the position would carry risk for a team still pursuing a championship window.

Bringing back Arik Armstead provides an experienced presence who already understands the defensive system, locker-room culture and expectations inside the organization.

During his first stint with the 49ers, Armstead played a major role in several playoff runs and helped anchor one of the league’s most physical defensive fronts.

The reunion also comes after a complicated ending between the two sides. Following San Francisco’s loss in Super Bowl LVIII, the team asked Armstead to take a pay cut, which he declined, ultimately leading to his departure.

Time, however, often softens those disagreements in the NFL.

Now, with Jacksonville moving on and San Francisco needing veteran depth along the defensive line, both sides have found a new opportunity to reunite.

For the 49ers, the move strengthens a defensive unit that remains central to their championship ambitions. For Armstead, it provides a chance to finish his career where he built his reputation as one of the league’s most respected defensive linemen.
