NFL Draft: Brenden Rice, son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, picked by Chargers - Yahoo Sports
Santa Clara, California . May 2026

For the first time since one of the greatest careers in NFL history came to an end, the San Francisco 49ers are once again bringing the Rice name back into the building.

According to reports, San Francisco has claimed wide receiver Brenden Rice — the son of franchise legend Jerry Rice — off waivers after another difficult chapter in his young NFL career.

For many 49ers fans, the move instantly carries emotional weight far beyond football.

Because the Rice name still means everything in San Francisco.

Brenden Rice Has Been Fighting To Escape A Legendary Shadow

Ever since entering the league, Brenden Rice has faced a challenge few young players could truly understand.

Trying to build an NFL career while carrying arguably the most iconic last name in football history.

The former USC receiver entered the league as a late-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Since then, his professional journey has been brutally unstable.

Rice has already spent time with:

  • the Chargers,
  • the Seahawks,
  • the Patriots,
  • and the Raiders

before now receiving another opportunity with San Francisco.

The 49ers become the fifth NFL team willing to give him a chance.

The NFL Journey Has Been Much Harder Than Many Expected

Despite flashes of athletic upside during college, Rice has struggled to establish himself consistently at the NFL level.

He appeared in only three games during his rookie season and saw very limited offensive action.

Across preseason opportunities, his production remained modest, and multiple teams eventually moved on from him before he could fully develop.

Still, many evaluators around the league continue believing the talent is there.

During his final season at USC, Rice recorded:

  • 45 receptions,
  • 791 receiving yards,
  • and earned All-Pac-12 honors

while catching passes from Caleb Williams.

That production continues giving teams hope that there may still be untapped potential waiting to emerge.

Brenden Has Always Wanted His Own Legacy

What makes this story especially emotional is that Rice has openly discussed the pressure connected to his family name for years.

He previously admitted:

he wants to create “his own legacy” and “his own name.”

Not simply live inside the shadow of his father’s legendary career.

That pressure has followed him everywhere.

Every roster move.

Every practice squad signing.

Every release.

And now, ironically, the team most connected to his father’s greatness may become the place where Brenden finally finds stability.

The Opportunity In San Francisco Feels Different

Football-wise, the path will still be extremely difficult.

San Francisco’s receiver room remains highly competitive, and nothing will be handed to Rice simply because of his last name.

If he wants to survive training camp and earn a roster spot, he’ll need to prove he belongs entirely on merit.

But emotionally?

This move feels impossible to ignore.

Because for decades, Jerry Rice helped define what greatness looked like in a 49ers uniform.

And now, years later, his son is receiving a chance to continue writing the next chapter of that story.

Maybe This Is Finally The Right Place

No one knows whether Brenden Rice will ultimately become an NFL success story.

At this point, he’s already faced:

  • roster cuts,
  • instability,
  • pressure,
  • and constant comparisons few players could survive emotionally.

But the dream is still alive.

And now, that dream continues in the same city where the Rice name became football royalty forever.

For 49ers fans, that alone makes this story feel a little different from the rest.
