The Detroit Tigers have been making strategic moves to bolster their roster for the 2026 season, aiming to solidify their status as postseason contenders. A key offseason move was securing Tarik Skubal with a record-breaking $32 million arbitration deal for his final year of club control. However, the Tigers have hit a rough patch since Skubal found himself on the injured list earlier this month.

The situation took another turn on Wednesday when Casey Mize had to leave his start against the Los Angeles Angels prematurely, dealing another blow to Detroit’s starting rotation. Despite these setbacks, there’s a glimmer of hope on the offensive front.

Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reported that Gleyber Torres and Kerry Carpenter are set to join Triple-A Toledo for rehab assignments this weekend. Stavenhagen noted, “Kerry Carpenter and Gleyber Torres are going to Toledo tomorrow.

Carpenter is expected to play on rehab assignment. Torres won’t play immediately but could by the end of the weekend.”

Kerry Carpenter is slated to begin his rehab assignment in right field with Triple-A Toledo on Friday. Meanwhile, Gleyber Torres will be in Toledo to work out, though his participation in rehab games might not commence until later in the weekend. Torres was placed on the injured list with a mild left oblique strain on May 6, followed by Carpenter, who joined the list with a left shoulder sprain four days later.

Torres has been vocal about his frustration with the slower-than-anticipated recovery process. The Tigers are certainly feeling his absence, as they’ve struggled to find their footing during this stretch.

Earlier this week, Torres took a break from swinging due to lingering discomfort in his oblique. Reflecting on his recovery, Torres shared, “From the beginning, I thought it was going to be a short period.

And now it takes me a little bit more than I expected. It feels really frustrating because I feel like I can’t do anything for the team.”

Before his injury, Torres had contributed significantly to the team, posting 1.2 bWAR over 32 games. However, the Tigers have stumbled to a dismal 6-19 record in May, placing them at the bottom of the American League Central. As they navigate this challenging period, the return of key players like Torres and Carpenter could be crucial in turning their season around.
