The Detroit Tigers are gearing up for an exciting weekend as manager A.J. Hinch shared some promising news about their pitching rotation.
Both Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize are set to make their much-anticipated return from injury, slated to start against the Cleveland Guardians this Saturday and Sunday. Mize, however, will take the precautionary step of throwing a bullpen session before his Sunday start to ensure he’s in peak condition.
In addition to these key returns, the Tigers have been busy bolstering their pitching staff. On Wednesday night, they struck a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers to bring in some experienced depth. The Tigers acquired right-hander Jacob Waguespack, a versatile pitcher who has logged 105.2 Major League innings since his debut with the Toronto Blue Jays back in 2019.
Waguespack, now 32, joined the Tigers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, as reported by Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group. After signing a minor league deal with the Brewers in the offseason and briefly exploring free agency in May, Waguespack returned to Milwaukee before the Tigers scooped him up.
While his Major League appearances have been limited to just 15 since his initial 78 innings in 2019, Waguespack’s recent performance offers a glimmer of hope. His 5.11 career ERA might not turn heads, but his impressive 36.3% strikeout rate in 21.2 innings at Triple-A suggests he could be a valuable asset for the Tigers’ bullpen as they navigate the season ahead.
