In the heart of Arizona, the Cardinals wrapped up their mandatory minicamp with a mix of optimism and a touch of disappointment. The team received encouraging injury updates on key players like Garrett Williams and Walter Nolen, but the news wasn’t all rosy. Rookie defensive lineman Kaleb Proctor, a promising fourth-round pick, suffered a significant setback with a torn meniscus, as revealed by head coach Mike LaFleur.

“Kaleb Proctor had a meniscus tear, so he’ll miss quite a bit of time. If not – I don’t want to say absolute – but if not the whole year,” LaFleur shared, highlighting the gravity of the situation. This injury is a tough pill to swallow for a defensive line that was counting on Proctor’s potential to bolster their interior strength.

The Cardinals had been actively reshaping their defensive line, bringing back familiar face Roy Lopez and adding Jonah Williams and Andrew Billings to their roster. Proctor, with his impressive college tape, was expected to be a dynamic addition alongside Nolen, both known for their athletic and twitchy profiles.

Unfortunately, Proctor’s injury echoes a troubling pattern for the Cardinals, as defensive linemen like Nolen and Darius Robinson have also faced pre-rookie season setbacks. It’s a blow to a team that was eager to see what Proctor could bring to the table.

General Manager Monti Ossenfort had high hopes for Proctor, especially after watching him perform against tough competition. “The good thing is he played against LSU this year.

Obviously, that’s the tape that everybody is going to go to, but he did play against other schools in the past. FBS schools and stuff like that,” Ossenfort noted.

Proctor’s ability to shine in an all-star game and his impressive physical development, including bulking up to the 290s, were seen as indicators of his potential to compete at the highest level.

Meniscus tears typically require up to six months of recovery, which means Proctor could potentially miss the entire season, as LaFleur hinted. This timeline puts him out until the final stages of the regular season, marking a challenging start to his NFL career. The Cardinals will need to rally and adapt without the promising rookie as they look ahead to the upcoming season.
