In the world of baseball, sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make. The Detroit Tigers might just be nodding in agreement after seeing Troy Melton’s performance on Thursday night.

Facing off against the Astros, Melton was a maestro on the mound, keeping hitters guessing until the sixth inning when Taylor Trammell finally broke through with a solo homer. Despite the Tigers’ 2-1 loss, Melton’s efforts were nothing short of impressive, striking out a season-high six batters and lowering his ERA to a sterling 2.39.

The Tigers’ offense, however, struggled to crack the code of Tatsuya Imai, who silenced their bats with ten strikeouts. While the loss marked Detroit’s third straight, coming off a pair of defeats against the Yankees, Melton’s performance was a silver lining.

There’s been a lot of chatter about the future of the Tigers’ rotation, especially with Tarik Skubal expected to leave in free agency. Framber Valdez is poised to step up as the seasoned leader, but don’t sleep on the young guns like Melton and Jackson Jobe, who could be back in action by late summer.

Interestingly, there was a time when Melton’s future with the Tigers wasn’t so certain. According to reports, he was a hot commodity at last season’s trade deadline, with other teams eyeing him as part of a potential deal for a right-handed bat. But the Tigers held on, a decision that seems wise in hindsight.

While Scott Harris, the Tigers’ executive, has faced criticism for his roster decisions-particularly for not bolstering the lineup-keeping Melton might just be a saving grace. The team’s struggles this season, sitting 13 games under .500, have been a tough pill to swallow for fans. Yet, the foundation of a rotation featuring Valdez, Jobe, and Melton offers a glimmer of hope for the future.

Looking ahead, if the Tigers can extend Casey Mize on a short-term contract and add another arm to the rotation, they could be in a much stronger position. The road hasn’t been easy, but with the right moves, the Tigers could be setting themselves up for a brighter tomorrow.
