Santa Clara, CA. The 2026 offseason has already reshaped the roster of the San Francisco 49ers following an injury-plagued 2025 season.

Determined to refresh their offensive weapons and reinforce a defense that struggled to generate pressure, the 49ers entered free agency with a clear mission.

The result has been a wave of bold additions, difficult departures, and major decisions still looming as the organization attempts to keep its championship window open.

Mike Evans Arrives as New Offensive Centerpiece

The most eye-catching move of the offseason came when the 49ers signed veteran wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year contract worth $60.4 million, including $16.3 million guaranteed.

Even at 32 years old, Evans remains one of the most consistent receivers in the league. His size, contested-catch ability, and red-zone dominance are expected to immediately make him the primary target in San Francisco’s evolving receiving corps.

Osa Odighizuwa Bolsters the Defensive Line

The 49ers also strengthened the interior of their defensive line by acquiring defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys.

San Francisco sent a 2026 third-round pick to Dallas to complete the deal. Odighizuwa’s quickness and interior pass-rush ability should help the defense generate pressure from the middle of the line.

Vederian Lowe Adds Depth at Offensive Tackle

To improve offensive line depth, the 49ers signed offensive tackle Vederian Lowe to a two-year, $12 million contract after his stint with the New England Patriots.

Lowe is expected to serve as a swing tackle, providing flexibility and depth behind the starting offensive line.

Brett Toth Provides Versatility on the Line

San Francisco also added offensive lineman Brett Toth, who signed a one-year deal after previously playing for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Toth brings valuable versatility, capable of playing both guard and center, giving the coaching staff additional depth along the interior line.

Key Departures Signal Changes at Wide Receiver

Several notable players have already left the team during free agency.

Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals, while return specialist Skyy Moore joined the Green Bay Packers.

Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott also departed, signing with the Tennessee Titans to reunite with former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

Uncertain Futures for Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings

The biggest roster question surrounds wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, whom the team has reportedly informed will be moved through either a trade or release after the new league year begins.

Such a move could free approximately $6.3 million in salary cap space.

Meanwhile, fan favorite receiver Jauan Jennings also faces an uncertain future. Despite the 49ers’ desire to keep him, his rising market value may exceed what the team is willing to pay.

What Comes Next for the 49ers

One of the most pressing priorities is resolving the contract situation of star left tackle Trent Williams, who is seeking a new deal with increased guaranteed money.

If negotiations fail, the situation could potentially lead to a holdout or even trade discussions.

The 49ers must also continue rebuilding their receiving group. Even with Mike Evans now in place, the team may need additional pass-catchers if both Aiyuk and Jennings depart.

Another major focus will be improving the pass rush. San Francisco finished last in the NFL with only 20 sacks last season, making it critical to find another edge rusher to complement star defender Nick Bosa.

With three compensatory fourth-round picks and seven total selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, the 49ers possess valuable resources to address those needs.

For San Francisco, this offseason represents more than simple roster adjustments. It is an attempt to reshape the team after a difficult season while ensuring the 49ers remain one of the NFC’s most dangerous contenders.
