Verlander’s Return to Detroit: A Homecoming Under the Lights

The stage is set for a nostalgic night in Detroit as Justin Verlander takes the mound once again in a Tigers uniform. This isn’t just any game; it’s a Sunday Night Baseball spectacle against the Cardinals, slated for April 5 at 7:20 p.m.

ET. Fans can catch the action streaming on Peacock.

For many, this marks a long-awaited moment, ever since Verlander inked a one-year deal with Detroit back in February.

Verlander, now 43, has deep roots in the Motor City. His journey began in Detroit, and despite years away, his connection to the city remains unbroken.

Reflecting on his early days, Verlander recalls the challenges Detroit faced and how the fans’ unwavering support during tough times left a lasting impact on him. “To buy a ticket and come to a ballgame was a huge expense for a lot of those fans, but it was also a getaway and something to celebrate,” he shared.

Now, as a seasoned veteran with a family, Verlander returns with a fresh perspective. “I was 22 years old, just a kid trying to figure things out.

Happened to be really good at baseball. But now it’s like just such a different experience,” he said, eager to embrace Detroit anew.

The excitement around Verlander’s return is palpable, with “Welcome Back” billboards dotting Detroit’s highways. His last start in a Tigers uniform at Comerica Park was on August 20, 2017, before his trade to Houston. Since then, he’s made five appearances as a visitor, most recently in 2024, delivering 12 scoreless innings over his past two starts in Detroit.

Verlander’s legacy at Comerica Park is formidable. He leads in most pitching categories, boasting 101 wins-more than double that of the next closest, Max Scherzer, who has 47. His 1,193 strikeouts also eclipse Scherzer’s 534.

The timing of Verlander’s return is serendipitous, aligning with his spot as the Tigers’ No. 4 starter. He’ll kick off his season against the Diamondbacks on March 30, setting the stage for his homecoming during the Tigers’ first home series. Had he been the No. 5 starter, fans would have had to wait until the following weekend against the Marlins.

As Verlander steps back onto the mound at Comerica Park, it’s more than just a game; it’s a celebration of his enduring bond with Detroit and its fans.
