The Tigers find themselves in a bit of a pickle this season, teetering on the edge of becoming sellers at the trade deadline. It’s a tough pill to swallow for a team that had its sights set on October baseball.
But here we are, and every move the front office makes is under the microscope. Trust is a rare commodity in Detroit right now.
One of those moves involved keeping Zack Short on the roster over the promising Hao-Yu Lee. Now, before you start throwing pitchforks, there’s a method to this madness.
Lee, who needs regular at-bats to hone his skills, was sent to Triple-A Toledo as Gleyber Torres returned from the injured list. It’s a move that might not have thrilled the fans, but it makes sense when you break it down.
Zack Short, often seen as more of a stopgap than a long-term solution, came through big time against the Rays. Batting from the nine spot, he delivered two hits, an RBI, and even crossed the plate himself.
Not bad for a guy who’s been a bit quiet with the bat this season. In his last two at-bats, Short matched his hit total from his previous 25, proving he can step up when needed.
The decision to keep Short over Lee boils down to versatility and defense. Short brings a solid glove to both shortstop and second base, offering the Tigers some much-needed flexibility.
On the other hand, Lee, despite his potential, has struggled defensively with a -3 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) at second base and has had trouble at the plate, posting just a .579 OPS in 32 games. With Torres back, Lee’s opportunities were going to be limited, making the minors a better place for him to get those crucial reps.
Lee’s potential is undeniable. Once a top-10 prospect in the Tigers’ system, he’s still just 23 and has plenty of time to develop.
Meanwhile, Short, over 30, is a known quantity-solid, if not spectacular. But right now, the Tigers need stability and reliability, and Short provides that, allowing the team to give players like Kevin McGonigle a breather without missing a beat.
In the grand scheme of things, sending Lee down isn’t a knock on his abilities but a strategic move to ensure he gets the playing time he needs to grow. For the Tigers, it’s about making the right calls today to build a stronger team for tomorrow.
