The Detroit Tigers are navigating a season that feels more like an endurance test than a sprint, with their Injured List (IL) looking like a who’s who of critical roster spots. It’s not just the absence of key players that’s been a challenge; those left standing have struggled to fill the void, reflecting the toll these injuries have taken on the team’s overall performance.

However, amidst the storm clouds, there’s a glimmer of hope. Each time a player has been sidelined, another seems to inch closer to making a comeback. The latest update brings some much-needed optimism, with encouraging news about Casey Mize, Troy Melton, and Javy Báez.

The most heartening update comes from Mize’s camp. He’s been throwing consistently during his IL stint, which means he might skip the typical rehab assignment. That’s a big win for the Tigers, as Mize is eligible to return as soon as Friday.

Tonight, the Tigers are trying something different against the Blue Jays by starting Brenan Hanifee as an opener, with Ty Madden expected to take over for a bulk of the innings. However, Saturday’s starter was a bit of a mystery until recently.

According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, Mize is set to be reactivated and will take the mound on Saturday. In another roster move, Connor Seabold is back in action, while Ricky Vanasco heads back to Triple-A.

In addition to these changes, Beau Brieske and Will Vest are taking steps forward, with Vest pitching in a rehab assignment tonight. Meanwhile, Justin Verlander is making progress of his own, having thrown a 50-pitch live batting practice session.

Mize’s return is a crucial development. His stint on the IL began after he left an April 28 game against the Braves with groin discomfort, leading to an adductor strain diagnosis.

Before this setback, Mize was boasting a solid 2.90 ERA and was starting to build a compelling case for a lucrative contract as free agency looms this offseason. Losing him was a significant blow to the Tigers’ rotation, arguably the first major one, not counting Verlander.

The hope is that Mize’s return will be the first of many, signaling a shift towards recovery for the team. Melton is already on a rehab assignment, and Vest is expected to join a Tigers affiliate soon, likely at the Triple-A level. As the Tigers work to get back to full strength, fans are eager to see if these returns can spark a turnaround in their fortunes.
