However, former Cowboys wide receiver and current analyst Jesse Holley believes another competition should also exist — and it involves former All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland.

Instead, Holley believes rookie fourth-round pick Devin Moore deserves a legitimate opportunity to compete for playing time immediately.
Holley emphasized that if head coach Brian Schottenheimer truly wants to establish a new culture of accountability inside the organization, past accomplishments and salary figures cannot guarantee starting positions anymore.
According to Holley, Dallas cannot afford to repeat the complacency that contributed to last season’s defensive disaster.
That statement carries significant weight considering Bland signed a four-year, $90 million extension and was once viewed as one of the league’s emerging defensive superstars.
But over the last two seasons, injuries and inconsistency have dramatically changed the conversation surrounding his future.
DaRon Bland’s Decline Raises Serious Questions
Only a few years ago, DaRon Bland looked like one of the NFL’s brightest young defensive stars.
During his historic 2023 season, Bland led the league with nine interceptions and set an NFL record by returning five interceptions for touchdowns. He was a game-changing defensive weapon capable of completely shifting momentum with one play.
At that time, Bland appeared destined to become one of the foundational pieces of the Cowboys defense for years to come.
Then injuries changed everything.
Bland suffered a fractured foot during training camp in 2024 and eventually required surgery. Although he managed to return and play 12 games last season, he clearly was not the same explosive and confident player who dominated opposing quarterbacks during his All-Pro campaign.

That is where rookie cornerback Devin Moore enters the picture.
The Cowboys selected Moore in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, but many analysts believe his talent level far exceeded his draft position.
The biggest reason Moore slipped was his extensive injury history throughout college.
The 6-foot-3 defensive back played only 19 games during his first three collegiate seasons due to multiple injuries involving his shoulder, back, and concussion-related issues.
However, when healthy, Moore consistently flashed starting-level NFL talent.
Last season finally gave scouts a better look at his full potential after he appeared in 11 games and managed to stay relatively healthy for most of the year.
Moore’s combination of size, athleticism, physicality, and length makes him an intriguing developmental prospect in today’s NFL, especially against larger receivers.
Some analysts already believe he could eventually become one of the steals of the entire draft class.
Kevin Turner of the “One-Star Podcast” recently suggested that Moore could realistically develop into a starting-caliber player for Dallas as early as 2027.
Turner pointed out that Moore’s injury history overshadowed the fact that he consistently earned playing time whenever he was healthy enough to take the field.
That distinction matters.
Rather than being viewed as a raw developmental project, Moore is considered a player who repeatedly demonstrated legitimate ability but struggled to stay available consistently.
If he remains healthy during training camp and preseason action, Moore could quickly force himself into the Cowboys’ defensive rotation.
And depending on Bland’s recovery, that opportunity may arrive much sooner than expected.
Brian Schottenheimer’s New Culture Could Change Everything
One of the biggest themes surrounding the Cowboys this offseason has been accountability.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer understands that last season’s defensive collapse cannot simply be blamed on injuries or bad luck. Dallas lacked consistency, discipline, and urgency throughout much of the year.
That is why several analysts believe the Cowboys coaching staff may finally be willing to prioritize competition over contracts and reputation.
If that philosophy truly becomes reality, no defensive position will be automatically protected.
Not even DaRon Bland’s.
The Cowboys desperately need faster, healthier, and more reliable production in the secondary if they hope to return to playoff contention in 2026.
And while Bland still possesses tremendous talent, the organization may no longer have the luxury of waiting indefinitely for him to rediscover his All-Pro form.
