In the heart of June, Dillon Dingler has been lighting up the scoreboard, while Kevin McGonigle and Riley Greene continue to deliver the kind of consistent performance that keeps Tigers fans cheering. However, the real surprise package for Detroit this month might just be Hao-Yu Lee.

After being sent down on June 2 when Gleyber Torres returned from the injured list, Lee was back in action less than two weeks later, thanks to Ty Madden’s move to Toledo. Since then, Lee has been a reliable figure at the lower end of the Tigers’ batting order, boasting a .346 average and a .769 OPS across 26 at-bats.

It’s the kind of performance that’s starting to win over the fans, even if his defensive skills still need some polish. Despite his status as a top prospect, the Tigers have always seemed a bit hesitant about Lee.

But this strong showing at the plate might be exactly what they needed to see.

Yet, there’s a cloud over this sunny performance. Lee’s current success might be more of a fleeting moment than a sustainable trend.

He’s swinging a hot bat, sure, but the glaring absence of walks in June is telling. With only four walks in over 100 at-bats and 31 strikeouts, Lee has some work to do in the patience department if he wants to stick around in Detroit.

For now, Lee’s spot on the roster seems secure as long as Torres is sidelined. But his real battle is for a place on the Opening Day roster in 2027, assuming Torres departs in free agency.

The Tigers’ infield is crowded, with other promising prospects like Max Anderson in the mix. A couple of weeks of hot hitting won’t be enough to elevate Lee beyond a Quad-A player unless he starts showcasing more patience at the plate.

While he’s always been prone to strikeouts, his minor league numbers-184 walks to 342 strikeouts with a .360 OBP-show he can balance aggression with discipline.

There’s likely a mental game at play here. As a rookie, Lee might be feeling the pressure to make those big, game-changing swings.

But if he wants to cement his place on the Tigers’ roster, he’ll need to prove that this impressive run isn’t his peak performance. The real challenge for Lee is demonstrating that he can consistently deliver at this level and beyond.
