TORONTO — The “injury bug” that has haunted the Blue Jays this April claimed its most recent victim on Friday night, and the timing couldn’t be more tragic. Outfielder Nathan Lukes, who had just completed a miraculous transformation from a vertigo-sidelined slunper to the team’s most dangerous hitter, was officially placed on the 10-day Injured List Saturday morning with a left hamstring strain.

Yohendrick Piñango is the latest player acquired at the 2024 trade deadline to join the Blue Jays

The injury occurred in the first inning of Friday’s contest while Lukes was rounding first base on a leadoff double. After a brilliant stretch where he recorded 11 hits in 21 at-bats—all while using U2’s “Vertigo” as his defiant walk-up song—the 31-year-old now faces a significant layoff. “It’s a gut punch for Nate,” Schneider said. “He worked through so much to get his vision and balance back, and he was finally seeing the ball. To have his body betray him on a routine play is just tough luck.”

In a corresponding move that has the scouting community buzzing, the Blue Jays selected the contract of 23-year-old outfielder Yohendrick Piñango from Triple-A Buffalo. Piñango, the organization’s #11 prospect, has been the talk of the International League this month, slashing .288/.370/.488 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 22 games. A left-handed hitter with “plus-plus” raw power and exceptional bat-to-ball skills, Piñango represents the “next man up” in a season defined by attrition.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Jays moved high-leverage reliever Yimi García (elbow) to the 60-day IL, a move that signals a longer recovery timeline for the veteran right-hander. While Piñango is primarily a bat-first player who may see time in left field, his presence adds a layer of left-handed thump to a lineup that has struggled for consistency. Whether he serves as a platoon weapon or an everyday fixture, the “Piñango Era” begins with high expectations as Toronto tries to patch the hole left by Lukes’ departure.
