Tarik Skubal has been the talk of the town as the Detroit Tigers’ ace, and for good reason. Over the past couple of years, he’s been nothing short of spectacular on the mound, steering the Tigers into the playoffs with his dominant performances. At 29, the left-hander is at the peak of his powers, but the 2026 season might be his swan song with the Tigers as he approaches free agency.
In Thursday’s Game 2 against the Milwaukee Brewers at Comerica Park, Skubal was on his game again, delivering a stellar performance until the seventh inning. That’s when things got dicey.
He allowed two runs, which tied the game, and then watched from the dugout as the Brewers took the lead off reliever Tyler Holton. The frustration was palpable as Skubal, known for his competitive spirit, showed his displeasure in the dugout, clearly upset with how the inning unfolded.
But baseball is a game of resilience, and the Tigers showed theirs. Spencer Torkelson stepped up in the ninth inning, launching a walk-off homer that sealed a 5-4 victory for Detroit and clinched the series. It was a thrilling finish that underscored the Tigers’ fighting spirit.
After the game, Skubal faced the media, candidly expressing his frustration over not being able to maintain the lead despite dominating much of the game. “Controlled contact all day, I thought,” he reflected.
“Ball gets through, and just so happens to be where our outfield’s not in a position. And that’s not a knock on positioning by any means; I’m just saying that we’re shifted the other way and it ended up being a double that scores two.
It’s just baseball. It happens.”
Skubal’s line for the day was four earned runs over six innings, allowing seven hits while striking out seven. His performance this season has been solid, with a 3-2 record and a 2.72 ERA over six starts. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Skubal to see if he can continue to lead the Tigers and what the future holds as he nears free agency.
