The Detroit Tigers’ pitching landscape has been a rollercoaster this season, but amidst the ups and downs, one unexpected player has emerged as a reliable force: Keider Montero. Originally called up from Triple-A, Montero has taken the mound with confidence, especially after Justin Verlander’s early April departure to the injured list. Though Montero’s performances have been somewhat variable, he’s consistently kept the Tigers competitive.

Following Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Montero sports a 4.00 ERA-a testament to his ability to hold his own in the big leagues. But with Verlander nearing his return to the rotation, the Tigers face a pivotal decision: what role will Montero play moving forward?

Montero still has an option left, meaning the Tigers could send him back down when the legendary Verlander is ready to pitch again. However, considering the bullpen’s recent struggles, including those of Connor Seabold, Burch Smith, and Drew Anderson, demoting Montero might not be the most strategic move. He’s already proven his worth in relief roles, making him a valuable asset for middle innings, especially if the current relievers continue to falter.

Manager A.J. Hinch recently shared that Verlander was thrilled with his latest bullpen session, which bodes well for his imminent return.

“That’s the most excited that I’ve heard him after his bullpens, which is a great sign; I don’t know what it means yet. But I know he was really pleased,” Hinch noted.

Verlander’s performance upon his return will likely dictate Montero’s fate. If Verlander struggles, Montero might retain his spot in the rotation, potentially even pushing Verlander to a bullpen role-a scenario no one hopes for but one that remains on the table. Additionally, should Montero continue to impress, he might challenge Jack Flaherty for a more permanent spot in the rotation as the season unfolds.

The most probable outcome sees Montero transitioning to the bullpen upon Verlander’s return, giving Hinch a versatile option ready to step in as needed. With the bullpen crying out for reinforcement, Montero could be just the solution the Tigers need.
